"Eh... wait, what? rewind this"

Your intro is rather peculiar. Your drum beat is, to be honest, mixed poorly. Downright poorly.

And it's one fucking shame. Dude, that 'rewind this' was literally my reaction to your drop. The melody / bassline is.. just.. sick. Absolutely fucking love your melodic structuce in that drop.

But although that's got me all excited, the rest just doesn't. I think your mixing is just entirely off. Your kick lacks punch, your snare lacks snap, your hats lack presence, the rest is muddy.

Eventually I just reached a point in your track where I failed to recognize any structure..

I don't know how I can word it any differently. And it fucking sucks, because I really do not want to badmouth this piece. I think it has significant potential if you sit down and tighten it up and I can only hope you help yourself to a cup of coffee in the morning and make that happen. ;)

Either way, keep up!

Pretty swell drop, the vibe's got me groovin' a little over here..

But I have to say that is lacking on some fronts. What you currently have as an intro is fine, but it sounds / feels incomplete. The basskick thing that leads up to the drop is nice, but it comes so unexpectedly that it doesn't really stimulate tension buildup. I think you should be WAAAAAY more experimental with regards to sound effects. Crashes, reversed eerie sounds, onehits with a shitton of reverb and distortion, pads to fill up the atmosphere etc. Make it build momentum and tension, so people aren't caught off guard by the drop but are begging for it to go. Add downlifters / uplifters. They are perfect just for this.

Drumwork was pretty spot on imo. As with anything, the more variation you can work in there without losing the flow the better. Try to have some mid frequency percussion bar the kick and snare. Hihats work very well, but some mid, mid-high percussion really add up to a drum beat.

I think your bassline is missing on sub a bit. Don't underestimate the brute power of a good sub bassline.. turn it up. ;)

But really, it's quite good as it is. It just feels a bit bland at places. (I have like 40 tracks with the same problem though haha, hope you don't mind an honest view. ;) )

Keep up!

9Wave responds:

Thanks for the constructive criticism! :D I'll keep in mind to add more pads/effects/hits to draw in the listener more, There is a lot of bass in the song. Most of it runs under 50Hz though, so you need some decent subs or good headphones to hear it.

I hear you on having a bunch of problematic tracks, I have a crap load that i just give up on haha.

I'll definately put more percussion, hats ans reversal effects in lol. Bear in mind this was made in about an hour xD

I may come back to it and do a touch up on it one day. :)

Again, Thankyou!

Damnit man, breaks will never die. Not on my watch.. but not on your watch either, it seems.

Phat beats. Please keep submitting these, I really like your style. There's not enough of this on NG.

keep it up n keep it real, big ups for the breakbeat feel!

AbruptMan responds:

Please you in the new year, I will make a new track))

This is the first piece (from the top, damnit) in the dnb charts that doesn't make me cringe.

Well executed, gritty bass. Cheesy 'phat' vocals. About anything I can ask for. I'ma go check out your other stuff, trying to rid the fucking kirby 'dnb' remix AT 120 BPM tune out of my head.

Yo man I think you've got a solid track here. I'm personally more a fan of the minimal dubs, but for what it is this is def proper material. Nice drop mate.

In terms of feedback.. meh, not too much to say. I think your snare needs to stand out more though, it's not fierce enough imo. During parts like 2:00 and around there, could go nicely with placing a subbassline there to keep it big.

Hit me up when it's done & keep up!

Pwnage101 responds:

Thanks man, glad to hear you liked it so far. I am trying to fix up the drum levels, to make them a little more prominent, I think the boosted snare is a good idea, and I will definitely be toying with the synths for a bit, I need a bit more solidity in some of the bass synths.

Hay, hay, hay, hay! DROP

Yeah I can't help but love this for the simple fact I love everything with a proper breakbeat.

Didn't really like the tone of the first synth tho.. the melody was nice, but I feel like the synth could've maybe had something to accompany it with, or some small FX or so.

But whatever, diggin the vibes. Keep up!

Well it ain't bad, but it's quite repetitive and a bit bland.

The intro in itself was structured very well and I think your percussive work is definitely ok, but the lack of a background melody, or some FX for extra atmosphere, made it feel empty. You can try putting in two or three one-shots into your drum loop itself, so it already has some character if you play it by itself.

I think you could've made the synths 'pop' out more. The intro melody felt like it took away power, instead of building it up. Try boosting the essential frequencies of your synths, because the melodics lacked power during the intro.. and became way aggressive during the drop. The high end was unbelievably sharp.

You can use drum fill-ins at the end of eac 16 bars, to mix it up a little. You had the same drum loop going on mostly.

I think you're definitely on the right track though and if this is your second dubstep track, I think you could produce some real sweet tunes with more experience. :)

Keep up!

De4dl0ck responds:

Thanks, helps me alot ^^ :)

!! Great style, brother. Seriously. It's so fucking rare to see somebody on NG go for the minimal, the glitch, the deep and the gritty.

It reminds me a lot of Culprate, one of my fav artists. The way the perc just forces me to (almost) bang my head against the monitor on every 2nd beat is lovely and the general synthwork sounds ace aswell. (Sometimes I felt like you could've really gone absolutely overboard with the growls though and push up the high end, like an audible sword stroke.)

Maybe a bit of downpitching and resonance automation for the bell arp thing?

I might fancy a collab sometime in the future, but I'm def keeping track of you for now. Big ups for this, my man, big fucking ups.

I-Saved-The-World responds:

To be compared to your favorite artist is an honor :) I wish i was a little bit better at the wobbles, I've been trying to work on coming up with something that sounds catchy, but is still unique. If you would ever like to collab, just shoot me a PM and we'll work on something sometime :)
Thanks for listening

Yeah, this is def pretty good. I think some of your perc samples sound a bit too dry though (in your intro)

I usually never listen to these styles, so I've absolutely no idea how to provide any other commentary. XD

If anything, I liked the punch of your kick. Not a personal fan of the melodics. (don't dig big melodics blended with glitch but that's just me)

Oh, this definitely is some of the better 8-bit stuff I've heard. Very pleasantly suprised! :)

The intro gave away that it'd be at least decent. I really like the ominous / mix of tranquility+sadness in the intro, it provides an excellent atmosphere. I have to say I was a little bit surprised at how 'happy' and 'upvibe' you actually made the drop, because of that. You use a lot of those high pitched perc hits, such as the one that almost sounds like mario forcing himself down a green pipe. I dunno.. it feels like it could've held on to the vibe it had earlier if you downpitched them a bit, or lowpassed them even.

Then afterwards, you bring the pads back in and it sounds like that again for a while, but only shortly. I was a little disappointed at how cross-over you went with the components of this track, to tell you the truth, but considering it all was mixed in rather nicely and the melodics themselves are produced properly, I suppose that doesn't really matter. It's just that I personally would've liked to hear you take it in another direction.

But really, this is your own music ofc and it's definitely produced alright, so good job! ;)

Keep up!

jbotsd responds:

Thank you for the review.

It originally was going to be a dark and sad halloween kinda theme but then then I had too much fun with arpeggios and everything else :(

Next time ill decide a theme and stick to it.

Thanks :D
